Affordable individual health insurance is one of the greatest challenges in the United States today. Even after the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act in 2010, health insurance costs have not come in line with the optimistic predictions of the Obama administration. In fact, in 2011, premiums climbed a staggering 9 percent. That’s three times the current rate of inflation and the biggest one-year hike in premium levels since 2005.

Although estimates vary by research group, it’s safe to say that between 50 million and 52 million Americans are living with no health insurance coverage whatsoever. Beyond the personal risk this poses in the event of a serious illness or injury, medical debt is the leading cause given for filing personal bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S. One major medical crisis can literally wipe out a family’s financial security for years to come.

Health benefits as a job-related benefit have long been a standard in America, but small businesses are feeling the pinch as well. More and more are dropping health insurance for their employees, throwing those people back out in the private insurance marketplace. If the Supreme Court upholds the constitutionality of the clause of the Affordable Care Act that would require all Americans to carry health insurance by 2014, the question of finding cheap individual health insurance will assume even more difficult proportions. This is one area of insurance coverage where it is paramount to understand exactly what a policy does and does not cover, to have a clear sense of the out-of-pocket expenses, and to know any policy limits that are in effect. For too long people have regarded their insurance as a complete answer to all health care needs. More and more people now see their policies as a vehicle to handle catastrophic or emergency illnesses, and are once again assuming the cost of regular care on their own.

Making intelligent decisions about affordable individual health insurance is a matter of comparison shopping, being well informed about what options are available, and being sufficiently well-educated on the subject to make the choice that best fits your needs and those of your family.

Studies Show Younger Americans Better Insured, But Wide Gaps Exist

According to a report released by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, a non-partisan group, health-care reform being implemented under the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act does seem to be leading to improved health insurance protection for young adults.

Under the terms of the legislation, dependent children must be carried on group health plans until they reach age 26. This benefit is not dependent on their status as students, nor is there a requirement that their parents be supporting them financially. Coverage cannot be limited based on marital status, but if they are married or have children, the benefits cannot be extended.

With so many people losing their health care coverage due to job loss or economic conditions, it is important to find affordable individual health insurance.  Finding the lowest price however, does not always mean finding the best quality insurance.  It is important to understand exactly what a policy covers before choosing an insurance policy.  Compare and review different policies to find the plan that best fits your needs.

The Types of Plans Available

Most people get insurance coverage through a group insurance policy provided by an employer.  Others use a government funded plan like Medicaid, Medicare or TriCare military insurance.  For those who do not have company sponsored insurance plans or who are self employed, there is also the option of a private individual health insurance plan.  This coverage is more difficult to qualify for than a group insurance plan though and requires the applicant to pass underwriting requirements before coverage will be issued.
