The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010 held out the promise of cheaper health insurance for a country plagued with spiraling medical costs where 50 to 52 million citizens live without any health coverage at all. That promise has not been realized, however, as health insurance premiums went up 9 percent in 2011, a catastrophic development for many Americans. For three years, the nation has grappled with a recession heavily marked by a mortgage crisis that led to waves of foreclosures. Unemployement continued to sit between 8 and 10 percent for the duration. Add to that a growing indebtedness in the 20-35 age bracket shouldering total student loan debt nearing $1 trillion, the economic picture in the U.S. is far from reassuring.

As Americans are forced to weigh all of these factors in their purchasing decisions, the best cheap health insurance is the policy that is also the best fit for the individual situation. Gone are the days of casually selecting coverage. Whereas health insurance was once seen as the answer to every medical expense, a new attitude is emerging where customers are willing to shoulder more of the cost of routine and preventive visits in order to get lower rates in the face of higher deductibles or fewer amenities. Health insurance is seen as a hedge against catastrophic illness, a reasonable characterization since medical debt is the leading cause of bankrupcty in the U.S.

Unless the Supreme Court rules the portion of the Affordable Care Act that requires every citizen to have health insurance by 2014 unconstitutional, we will be forced to learn more about health coverage in the coming two years than ever before. There is no single answer to what the best insurance plans are for you and your family, but there are ways to learn to make the best decisions from among the choices at your disposal.

How Do I Make the Right Health Insurance Choice?

The answer is simple:  a methodological approach.  Begin with the basics, such as your personal situation and needs, and go from there.  This may sound counterintuitive, given how many people make a health insurance choice purely based on price.  However, finding a plan that really fits will minimize what you pay throughout the life of the policy.  Here are some tips and tricks to making a strategic, informed decision:

Analyze your lifestyle.  Do you work in a high-risk job, or sit at a desk all day?  Do you prefer white water rafting or knitting in your spare time?  For those who lead sedentary lifestyles, reside in safe areas, and take little bodily risk, a plan that focuses on routine care and health maintenance and prevention might fit.  Alternatively, those who are active, athletic, or accident prone may consider plans that make provisions for sports medicine and well-priced acute and emergency care.
