Surprised? Check inside almost every teenage boys room and you will find a video game loving pubescent, more keen on killing King Bowser than being physically active.

Sound like an over-generalization? Sure. But the numbers tell a different story. The majority of teens are less active, putting them at risk for diabetes and obesity.

A study by the Center for Disease Control or the CDC shows that only 10 percent of teens are getting adequate physical exercise. Panicked? Well, not so fast. The study is not completely indicative of what the entire nation follows. You see, the CDC’s study only encompassed 9 states, hardly a true sample of the whole nation. While the study cannot tell the story for the whole nation, it can, however, display a startling trend that is surely spreading throughout the country. Teens are moving less, and this is a problem.

Thankfully, my state fared better than others, but that does not mean we are out of the clearing entirely. The study showed that girls were lagging behind their teenage male counterparts for exercise. And this can be problematic.

1. The teenage years are when habits and skills are developed and created. The fact that these teens are less active is problematic for the lifestyles they live when they are older will be drastically affected. I’m not saying that no habits can be changed, but children often take their lifestyles into adulthood.

2. Less active teens can translate into big money problems. Like I wrote above, less activity leads to obesity and type II diabetes, which is often associated with obesity. The links to obesity and diabetes are not disputed, however ways to take care of the epidemic are. Obesity and diabetes are expensive. Those who suffer from obesity tend to have serious health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, bone problems in joints, hypertension, just to name a few. And say goodbye to inexpensive health insurance. Health insurance premiums will skyrocket to help cover the deficit of the increasing health care costs. Let’s just say it pays to be healthy. (Some health insurance companies are rewarding their employees for being healthy. A few months ago I received $100 from mine just for that. It literally pays to be healthy.)

3. If teens are less active, we have to get to the root of the problem. Since the issue is more that teens are less active and not necessarily obesity, it could be easier to target. It is not realistic to ban video and computer games and the hide the TV remote, however some boundaries on those sedentary activities is not a bad idea. (Of course, this is up to the discretion of the parents.) However, it might be best to target the reason why teens are active and try and spread that idea. As for girls, who are less active than male teens, they are more motivated by sports because they want to feel included and because of their peers. Getting girls involved with this in mind can help increase activity.

Content provided by <a

I think it is always helpful to get some advice from someone who has been there before, I know that every situation and everybody is different so I put these tips together that would be useful for most anyone who is leaving home for college.

Get involved

I would say that getting involved is one of the most important things you can do when moving out and going to college. When I say get involved I mean like go and have fun, volunteer, and get to know your classmates especially in your classes you never know when you might need class notes, a partner or just someone to talk to. There are a ton of fun things to do, parties, fun lectures, clubs or even recruiting events where you can get to know industries you might be interested in, if nothing else they usually have free food. One of the most important ways to get involved is to talk to your professors whether you talk to them after class, commenting in class or visiting them during their office hours. This can pay huge dividends when you are having trouble with an assignment, exam and who knows they might be able to write you a letter of recommendation or become a great friend and mentor.

Sign up for extra classes

College is way different from high school. Your professors usually do not get to know you unless you are proactive and usually they do not care if you come to class or turn in assignments, I guess they figure you are old enough to do things on your own. Another thing about college is it is as much about knowing your subject as your professor so I learned to sign up for multiple professors teaching the same class to see who I meshed with best, I am saying find a good professor that you can learn the best from not just the easiest because you are only cheating yourself by taking the easiest class.

Learn to shop, cook, and budget

I think one of the most important things to prepare for is shopping, cooking, and budgeting. If you are like me then having a few lessons before leaving home go a long way. I survived but I think taking some time to find simple nutritious recipes that are affordable go a long way. I found that working a part time job helped me pay for school and helped me stay focused in school. I also found that you get really cheap student health insurance online or through the school.

Start preparing now

All of these skills to succeed in college do not suddenly appear once you step foot on a college campus. Start preparing now. As a high school student you can learn the basics of budgeting, get involved in high school activities and take classes that will earn you college credit.

Content provided by <a

Everyday there seems to something new about the debate. But don’t wait for the government to come and insure you. It could takes months for them to make any progress, and years for them to make solutions. If you are uninsured it is important that you find insurance right away. Getting sick, or insured while uninsured can cost you much more then just your health. Medical bills are extraordinarily high and can completely wipe out your bank account if you are uninsured.

There are many options for cheap health insurance. Students have even more choices that will help them get insurance. Most companies will let you stay on your families plan if you’re a full time college student. If this is an option for you, it is probably your cheapest option. If you are looking to pay for your own insurance there are many options.

There are even companies that specialize in student insurance. You can pick from plans that are designed for full time students, part time students, recent graduates, and even for students that are traveling abroad.

Talk to a health care broker to see what your options are. A broker will help you decide on the right plan for you. They will also help you find the best cheap health insurance. Student insurance is typically less expensive, and can cover all of your needs.

If you are in between school and a career you can still get temporary cheap health insurance. Student programs can be extended until you get a job with programs like Cobra. You should also look online to find a program. The internet has many resources that will allow you to compare multiple companies and plans. The internet is also probably the most up to date source as public policy seems to change daily.
<p

However, because of this attitude, they put themselves, as well as their families, in financial jeopardy. Finding cheap student health insurance is the best thing you can do, and it can save you a lot of grief and high medical bills if something did go wrong with your health.

The first thing you should do when searching for cheap student health insurance is to look for a temporary insurance policy. This is a great thing that you can do while you are looking for a permanent health insurance policy. This might be with a job that has not yet been finalized. Be aware that temporary coverage usually only covers major medical situations without the extras. However, this will keep the monthly premiums low.

Check with your school to find out if they offer any health plans or discounts on health plans for being a student. Look over this plan very critically and be sure to compare it with other plans from insurance companies. You want to make sure that you are getting the best rates with the best coverage.

Always compare health insurance quotes from three or more different insurance companies. The key to finding the best insurance coverage is to finding competition among different insurance companies. Be very careful with companies that you have never heard of before, because they can be very risky and leave you unprotected and uncovered in many medical situations.

Cheap student health insurance is not all that difficult to find. All it takes is a little determination and you will find the best rates. If something does happen to you and you require medical assistance, you will be glad you took the time to look.

However, students often place themselves and their family’s financial security in jeopardy because of this “devil may care” attitude.

Health insurance for students is often quite cheap as one of the largest determining factors in pricing insurance rates is age. Everything else being equal, the older an individual is the more they will pay in monthly premiums. Cost should not be a deterrent for students in finding adequate health insurance coverage. Even on a tight budget there are low cost options for students to investigate.

Here are a few quick steps to take in searching for cheap student health insurance:

1. Look for a temporary health insurance policy. If a job offer with benefits is on the horizon then a temporary health insurance policy may be a good route until the job is realized. Temporary health care coverage is usually major medical only and does not come with copays and other extras – this will help to keep the monthly premiums low.

2. Check with the student’s college or university to see if they offer any health care plans or discounts. If the school offers a health plan then view the plan with a critical eye and be sure to compare its benefits and coverage to a few other comparable plans from reputable insurance companies.

3. Compare individual health insurance quotes from at least 3 different health insurance companies. Competition among insurance companies is the key to finding the lowest rates. (Watch out for fly by night insurance companies that you have never heard of and also steer clear of discount health plans which are not true insurance and are tremendously risky – leaving you unprotected for most of the cost of a large medical bill).

Penned by : Studying abroad gives a lot of opportunities to students, especially college students. But with these opportunities comes greater risk. Why? Because if you are studying in a foreign land, you may not be covered with basic health insurance coverage. Often, universities and colleges offer this basic coverage, but once you apply to study overseas, that same coverage not is applicable in that country. It is therefore necessary that you be covered with international student health insurance.

International student health insurance provides medical care and treatment for students who are studying abroad. The last thing that you want to experience when you study in a different country is to get sick or meet an accident, and worry about the payment for medical bills (especially since you are away from parents). That is why to allay these concerns; most parents of students away for college have their children covered with international health insurance.

Basically, there are two types of coverage for international students: the travel medical coverage, for trips from seven days to 12 months, and the coverage for repatriation. A summer session of study will fall under the travel medical coverage, and this can provide you up to $1 million for treatment on sickness or injuries that may occur in the foreign country. The coverage for repatriation, on the other hand, includes accidental death and hazardous sports activities and pays expenses involved in getting the student back to the United States when there are no other funds available.

But with the existence of so many insurance companies offering different health insurance, it is rather hard to choose which one offers the best benefits and features. It is therefore important that you know what you really need and how long you will study in the foreign country, so you can scrutinize each type of coverage available.

So, don’t let the excitement of studying abroad make you forget of securing your health. Talk to your parents about getting coverage now.

A <a

International scholarship is an excellent opportunity no one sane would pass up. But as you pack your bags and plan your next four years in a European country, international student insurance should move ten leaps up your list of priorities Here’s a couple of reasons why you should think about health insurance now.

1. Guard against uncertainty. Although you may be physically fit and in perfect shape, you can’t be sure you won’t need non-routine medical attention while abroad. Even if you have coverage from either parent as a qualified dependent, these policies are not specifically designed with you in mind. Unlike student health insurance, international trips could very well be an exclusion item. If not, the policy would normally have several qualifying or disqualifying clauses.
2. Finance planning begins even before you graduate. You don’t want to begin your adult life burdened with debt because of a hefty medical bill. That, on top of student loans. That is not to say having fun now and worrying about debt later is out of the question. You could go that route, too, but think of how much fun you’ll be missing out on when you’ll have to work two jobs while your friends go dancing on Friday nights.

You may have had to work a part-time job back home to stash some extra cash but you probably lived an overall sheltered, well-provided for kind of life. Dad took care of the doctor and dental visits and mom stocked the fridge and the cupboards well. But when you’re out on your own, paying for student loans and medical bills, Mom and Dad won’t be a running distance away.

Don’t get caught on the wrong foot. As you plan your life ahead, make a note to request for a quote and shop for providers of student health insurance. International students like yourself should look into a combined medical and travel insurance plan for optimum protection at minimal premium costs. Where your health or your future is at stake, it’s better to be overprotected than unprotected.

Content provided by <a
