Primarily, group health insurance plans are the vehicle by which employers offer health coverage benefits to employees. The policies are crafted as “one size fits all” packages, meaning everyone in the company has access to the same options, monetary levels, and medical care choices. Unfortunately, due to the recession that has plagued American since 2009, the percentage of the population covered by job-related group insurance has dropped to 55.3 percent.

This decrease is concurrent with a dip in private insurance coverage across the population due to high costs, so that now almost 51 million people in the U.S., about 17 percent of the population, lives without health insurance. And, although precise numbers are difficult to obtain, much of the rest of the populous would be considered under insured, a fact supported by the statistic that more than half the personal bankruptcy proceedings filed in the U.S. are attributable to medical debt.

Even those Americans who are covered by group health insurance through their jobs are struggling with an 8 percent increase in premium costs since the The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010. That translates, on average, to an extra $452 a month from already thin and strained paychecks. Many small employers have stopped offering health care benefits to their workers because they can no longer afford the coverage. Because President Obama’s campaign pledge in 2008 was an average health care savings per family of $2,500, health insurance will be a major point of debate in the 2012 presidential election.

In the meantime, it is more imperative than ever that workers understand and maximize the group insurance benefits they do have. It is also important to understand gaps in that coverage and to have a “plan B” should your group insurance disappear quickly leaving you and your family unprotected.

Rising Health Care Costs Imperil Small Businesses

Posted on .

During 2011, many small business owners in America dropped health benefits for their employees. Going into 2012, the next tier of disappearing job-related coverage may be waiting in the wings, as some pundits say premiums could increase by as much as 18 percent.

Small Business Owners Carrying the Full Insurance Load

Many business owners split the cost of health coverage with their employees, but small companies tend to foster an intimate work culture. Cognizant of the state of the economy, employers who have shouldered the entire burden of insurance costs may have to choose between keeping their business afloat or their workers insured.

Due to the recession, which began in 2009, and a job market that has hovered near 10 percent for almost two years, caring employers feared that if their workers had to pay the full cost of their insurance, they would opt out, thus depriving themselves and their families of health benefits.

Many travel out of their home country on a very limited basis, and so choosing from the traditional health coverage options is just perfect for them. These plans largely offer everything a person spending most of their time inside their country will need. However, other people travel extensively and some may even spend part of their year living overseas. These people may be retired and travel extensively around the world. They may have the need to travel for their job, or they may even have family overseas and visit their family every chance they get for extended periods of time. For these people who travel overseas extensively, a global health insurance policy should be considered.

Do You Need Global Health Insurance?

A good friend of mine was in a severe car accident, while driving through Morocco. Although he was certainly not short on finances, because he had no global health insurance, he was in a huge bind when he got to the hospital.  In such pain that he could barely talk, let alone think, the doctors refused to work on him until he came up with the money to pay for all the work. Imagine being in a position of extreme pain and agony and having someone blackmail you for money! That is exactly what could happen if you don’t have global health insurance.

When to Consider Global Health Insurance

Posted on .

If you are planning to travel outside your own country, you need to purchase travel insurance to cover potential medical expenses you may incur in the country you are traveling to.  However, if you travel on a regular basis outside your country for business or personal reasons, you should purchase a global health insurance plan. This type of plan will cover you when sometimes when you are in your own country or in almost any other country you travel to.

If you work for a company that has divisions in one or two other countries and you seem to need to travel to these divisions more than once or twice a year, global health insurance is a necessity. Many people make the mistake of assuming that their major medical insurance provided by their employer will cover them when they are traveling in a foreign country. That is usually not the case. Most plans will cover you in your home region and your home country only.  Don’t find out the hard way that you need global health insurance coverage.

Do You Really Need Global Health Insurance?

If you are an executive or other business person who travels extensively in other countries, then you might think that you would be covered by your employer-provided health care while you are abroad. But, if you take a closer look at your health insurance policy, you might find out that you are not. If you get sick or injured in a foreign country, you might find yourself paying out of pocket for many more medical expenses than you were prepared for. By purchasing global health insurance, you will be protected while you are abroad, whether you are there on business or just for fun.

Global health insurance is also ideal for the student or young person who is travelling around the world. Students rarely have their own health insurance, and even if they did, it would not cover them while they are travelling in a foreign country. The likelihood of a younger person getting injured or ill while in another country is somewhat higher than an executive, and because of this, it is absolutely vital that they be covered with some form of global health insurance before they ever set foot in another country.

Why You Need Global Health Insurance

Do you do any traveling? Whether it is often due to business or just the occasional family vacation, every time you leave the country you are putting yourself at risk to be stranded in a foreign country with no health insurance.  The reason is because even if you are insured at home, many policies have limitations that exclude coverage outside of your home country. As a result you may find yourself in need of medical attention and have no choice but to pay a fortune to get help. To eliminate the chance of this happening you should look into global health insurance.

So how do these plans work? Much like traditional insurance plans, global health insurance covers a portion of your medical expenses in exchange for a monthly premium. However since these policies are global there are no limitations as to where the coverage applies. No matter if you get ill in Africa or injured in Asia you will be able to seek medical attention at any nearby approved medical facility. There are different plans that cover either long term travel or just the occasional visit.
