Finding Temporary Medical Insurance

For most of Americans, shopping for medical insurance is nothing we have ever done. We have either gone without medical insurance or had it provided by our employer. But, when you are in between jobs or in a job that has no benefits package, then you may need to buy temporary medical insurance to make sure you are covered.
Buying medical insurance is hard enough, but buying temporary medical insurance is actually a little harder. The trick is to find a policy that will cover you primarily for the catastrophic situations that can arise, and not for the everyday illnesses that force you to see a doctor. Because you will only be buying the policy for a short time (a year or less), the price can be high, but you will be glad you have it if something goes terribly wrong with you or your family.
When you are shopping for temporary medical insurance, the best thing you can do is to really compare policies from different companies. It is easy to do this online through one of the many websites that specializes in offering health insurance policies. You will be looking for a policy with a short waiting period (a month or less), and one that offers a very low deductible, so that you aren’t paying right off the bat.
Your goal should be to buy this type of insurance for a short period of time only, usually to be replaced by another policy that is offered by your job. If you are in between jobs, then this is a more affordable alternative to COBRA, which is a temporary medical insurance policy offered by the government, in conjunction with your employer, and can cost much more than the traditional policies that you can buy by yourself. You will always save money by choosing your own policy online.

Temporary medical insurance isn’t ideal for most people in most situations. It comes with an often higher price tag than traditional policies, and so when you use the plan longer than intended, it can get quite pricey. However, for those who need a short-term solution to insuring themselves or their family, this type of short-term coverage is ideal.
Many people seek to obtain temporary medical insurance while they are between jobs. This may include a recent college graduate who is no longer eligible to be under his parents’ plan but who has not yet found an employer with an employer-sponsored plan. It may also be ideal for someone who has recently been laid off and does not want to pay the high cost for COBRA coverage, or someone who has been terminated from his position in a company. These are just a few of the many reasons that a family or individual may seek to obtain short-term coverage.
The fact is that temporary coverage is not offered by all companies, and those who do offer this type of coverage often do not offer affordable pricing options. Many find that it is more affordable than COBRA coverage and it is often better than assuming the risk of someone in their family falling ill or getting injured if the family is not insured at all. So while the price is often high for this short-term coverage, it certainly does have its benefits.
An insurance broker is the perfect place to start looking for short-term coverage. Such a broker is very knowledgeable of the insurance market and can quickly steer you into a policy that is just right for you. They will shop around and find the most competitive quotes, and then will walk you through the various plan options and answer any questions you may have. Most people aren’t experts in insurance, and so it helps to have someone who is an expert guide you through this process.
